CarPlay adapter or retrofit module — which do you actually need?

Search for a CarPlay adapter and you get two things that look interchangeable and are not: a €25 dongle from a marketplace listing, and a €219 retrofit module.

People buy the €25 one, it does nothing in their car, and they conclude CarPlay retrofitting is a scam. It is not — they bought the wrong category of product.

The difference is one question, and you can answer it in ten seconds.

The question

Does your car already have Apple CarPlay from the factory?

Plug your iPhone into the car's USB port with a cable. If a CarPlay screen appears, the answer is yes. If nothing happens beyond charging and maybe Bluetooth audio, the answer is no.

That is the whole decision. Everything below is detail.

What an adapter actually does

An adapter plugs into the USB port you would normally use for the CarPlay cable. It takes the wired CarPlay signal your car already produces and turns it into a wireless connection.

It cannot create CarPlay. It converts CarPlay that already exists from cable to wireless.

Buy one if: your car has factory wired CarPlay and you are tired of plugging in the cable every trip.

Do not buy one if: your car has no CarPlay. There is nothing for it to convert, and no amount of pairing will change that.

We do not currently stock these. Any reputable brand does the job — CarlinKit and Ottocast are the usual names. We are telling you this because it is the honest answer, and because we would rather you spend €35 elsewhere than €219 here on something you do not need.

What a retrofit module actually does

A module is fitted inside the dashboard, between the factory head unit and the screen. It intercepts the video signal, injects a CarPlay interface, and hands control back to the factory system when you switch away.

It adds CarPlay to a car that never had it. That is a fundamentally harder job than converting a cable to Wi-Fi, which is why it costs more and why it has to match your exact infotainment system.

Buy one if: your car has a factory screen but no CarPlay — a BMW with CCC or CIC, an Audi with MMI 3G, a Mercedes with NTG 4.5, a VW with RNS 510.

Why the €25 dongles rank so well and disappoint so often

Search volume for "CarPlay adapter" is enormous, and marketplace listings dominate it. Most of those products are legitimate — for the narrow job of making existing CarPlay wireless.

The problem is the listings rarely say "your car must already have CarPlay". The photography shows a generic dashboard. The title says "for BMW Audi Mercedes VW". A buyer with a 2011 E90 reasonably concludes it will work in a 2011 E90.

It will not. The E90 with CCC has no CarPlay signal to convert.

So: the dongles are not fake. They are just answering a different question than the one most searchers are asking.

If an adapter solves your problem, buy an adapter. Spending €219 on a module for a car that already has CarPlay is money wasted, and we will tell you so if you send us the VIN.

The third option: a portable screen

There is a case neither product covers — cars with no usable factory screen at all. Older vehicles, base trims, vans, the VW Up with its phone cradle.

For those, a portable CarPlay screen mounts on the dashboard or windscreen and works independently of the car's electronics. It is not integrated and it does not look factory, but it works where nothing else does.
