CarPlay modules for Audi: MMI 3G, RMC and MIB

Audi is the brand where the wrong module is ordered most often, because the same car in the same year can carry two entirely different systems depending on whether navigation was specified.

Identifying the system

The screen is the first signal. A recessed display behind a frame with an MMI rotary controller and no touch surface means MMI 3G. A free-standing panel that rises on start-up, with a touch controller and often Virtual Cockpit, means MIB or MIB2. Two touchscreens and no physical controller at all means MIB2 High or MIB3.

The smaller cars are a separate case: the A1 and Q3 from 2012 to 2018 use MMI 3G HN+, a different hardware revision that the standard MMI 3G module does not fit.

The A6 C7 trap

Audi sold the C7 with MMI 3G, which has built-in navigation, and with RMC, which does not. Same dashboard, same screen, same controller, overlapping years — and they need different modules.

Open the main menu. If there is a Navigation entry you have MMI 3G. If the menu shows only Radio, Media, Telephone and Settings, you have RMC. Guessing here is the single most common cause of a return.
