Audi CarPlay retrofit: MMI 3G, MMI 3G HN+, RMC or MIB — which system do I have?

Audi is the hardest brand to get right, and it is not close.

BMW has five iDrive generations in a reasonably clean sequence. Audi has MMI 3G, MMI 3G HN+, RMC, MIB, MIB2 and MIB3 — and the same model in the same year can carry two completely different systems depending on whether the original buyer ticked the navigation box.

The A6 C7 is the clearest example. Same car, same dashboard, same screen size. One has MMI 3G with navigation, the other has RMC without it. They need different modules and there is no way to tell from the outside.

A3 8V (2012–2020)

The A3 8V is the single most searched Audi for CarPlay retrofit, and it is straightforward.

The 8V uses the MIB platform. The giveaway is the screen: it rises out of the dashboard on start-up and is a thin, free-standing panel rather than a recessed one. The controller sits on the centre tunnel, and on higher trims it has a touch surface on top.

The MIB / MIB2 module covers it. Note that the earliest 8V cars (2012–2013) can still be MMI 3G — if your screen is fixed rather than retractable, send us the VIN before ordering.

A4 B8 (2009–2016) and A4 B9 (2016+)

These are two entirely different cars electronically, and the B8/B9 distinction matters more than the year.

B8 — recessed screen, MMI rotary controller with buttons around it, no touch. This is MMI 3G. Use the MMI 3G B8 module. The same module covers the A5 and Q5 of the same generation.

B9 — free-standing screen, MMI touch controller, often Virtual Cockpit behind the wheel. This is MIB / MIB2. Use the MIB / MIB2 module.

If you are unsure which generation you have: the B8 facelift (2012–2015) still has the recessed screen. The B9 arrived in late 2015 and looks visibly more modern inside.

A6 C7 and A7: the one that catches people out

This is where most wrong orders happen, so read it carefully.

Audi offered the C7 with two separate infotainment systems:

• MMI 3G — the full system, with built-in navigation. Screen rises from the dashboard. Rotary controller plus a touchpad on higher trims.
• RMC (Radio Media Center) — the entry system, without navigation. Same physical screen, same controller, same dashboard.

You cannot tell them apart by looking at the car from outside, and you cannot tell from the model year — they overlap from 2012 to 2015.

How to tell: open the main menu. If there is a Navigation entry, you have MMI 3G. If the menu has only Radio, Media, Telephone and Settings, you have RMC.

Then choose accordingly: MMI 3G module or RMC module. Both €219. The wrong one will not work.

A6 4F and Q7 (2009–2015)

The older A6 (4F) and the first-generation Q7 share an MMI 3G platform with a distinctive narrow, almost square display. Use the MMI 3G 4F module.

The Q7 ran on this system until 2015. From 2015 the Q7 4M moved to MIB and needs the MIB module instead.

A1 and Q3 (2012–2018): MMI 3G HN+

The smaller Audis got a variant called MMI 3G HN+. It behaves like MMI 3G but uses a different hardware revision, and the standard MMI 3G module does not fit.

HN+ is recognisable by its screen being built into the dashboard rather than retractable, at 6.5" or 7" with navigation. The MMI 3G HN+ module is made specifically for it.

If your A1 or Q3 has a Concert or Symphony radio with no navigation, none of these modules apply — get in touch and we will tell you honestly whether there is a solution.

A8 D4 (2010–2017)

The A8 runs MMI 3G but with a more complex integration: additional modules, Bang & Olufsen amplification, and on some cars rear screens. The A8 MMI 3G module handles it, but budget more time for the install and read the instructions before starting.

A6 C8, A7 4K, A8 D5, Q8 and e-tron (2018+)

The newest generation runs MIB2 High or MIB3 — two touchscreens, no physical controller at all.

These cars usually already have CarPlay, but wired only, and in most markets no Android Auto whatsoever. The MIB2 High / MIB3 module (€329) makes CarPlay wireless and adds wireless Android Auto, while keeping Audi connect and Virtual Cockpit untouched.

What stays and what changes

Kept: MMI navigation, radio, Audi connect, Virtual Cockpit, Bang & Olufsen sound, reversing camera, parking sensors, steering wheel controls, the MMI dial and touchpad.

Added: wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Google Maps and Waze on the factory screen, Spotify through the factory speakers, Siri and Google Assistant.

Nothing is cut and nothing is coded. The module sits between the head unit and the screen, and can be removed without trace.

Common questions

Do I lose Audi connect or Virtual Cockpit?
No. Both keep working exactly as before. CarPlay navigation mirrors onto Virtual Cockpit the same way factory CarPlay does.

How do I tell MMI 3G from MMI 2G?
MMI 2G is the older, pre-2009 system with a monochrome-feeling interface and no 3D map. None of the modules above fit MMI 2G. If your car is a 2005–2008 A6 or A8, send us the VIN first.

Can I fit it myself?
Yes, on most models. Removing the MMI unit takes 30–60 minutes. The A8 is the exception and takes longer.

How long is the warranty?
24 months on every module.
