CarPlay modules for BMW, by iDrive generation

BMW has shipped five iDrive generations since 2004 — CCC, CIC, NBT, EVO and MGU — and the name appears nowhere in the car. It is a factory designation, and it decides which module fits.

Identifying the system

A recessed screen with a plain rotary controller and a text-only list menu is CCC. The same physical layout but with icons in the menu and a 3D map is CIC. A free-standing screen with a black list menu, usually 8.8 inches, is NBT. Tiles instead of a list means EVO. Tiles plus a fully digital instrument cluster means MGU.

The E60 and E90 each span two generations, so on those cars the menu test matters more than the year.

The most expensive mistake

NBT was built with two different physical connectors to the screen — four pins or six. It is not an option, it is not in any document, and it cannot be told apart from the menu, the screen size or the presence of a touchpad.

The wrong one damages nothing; it simply does not seat, and you find out with the console already apart. Remove the trim beside the screen and count the pins, or send us the VIN. Details in the 4-pin or 6-pin guide.
