BMW NBT: 4-pin or 6-pin? The most expensive retrofit mistake

This is the most frequently mis-ordered part in the whole catalogue. Not because the system is complicated, but because BMW put two different connectors inside one system, never wrote it down anywhere, and never offered it as an option.
The pattern is always the same. Someone correctly works out that their car is NBT. They check the controller, the menu, the year — everything matches. They order an NBT module. A week later they take the console apart, pull the head unit, and the connector on the module has nowhere to go.
Nothing in their reasoning was wrong. There is just one step that most people do not know exists.
What NBT is
NBT is the iDrive generation BMW introduced around 2012 and kept in production until roughly 2016. The name NBT appears nowhere in the car's own menus. BMW uses it internally, and owners only learn it when they need something for the infotainment.
It is easy to recognise. The screen stands on the dashboard like a separate panel, with no frame around it — usually 8.8 inches on higher trims, smaller on base cars. The menu is black, with a vertical list on the left and content on the right. The map rotates in 3D without lag. The controller between the seats often has a smooth touch surface on top that you can write letters on, although the touchpad was an option and there are NBT cars without it.

What remains is the easy part, which is not easy: which of the two connectors you have.
Why two versions exist at all
NBT is not one piece of hardware. Across four years of production the head unit went through revisions, and with them the physical link to the screen changed. Some units use a connector with four pins, others with six.
From BMW's point of view this was never a decision that needed explaining to a customer. The buyer of a new car never sees that connection, never touches it, and has no reason to care. It is not a line item on a price list, it is not in the registration document, and it is not part of any trim level. It is a production detail decided on the assembly line.
The problem appears fifteen years later, when somebody wants to put something between the head unit and the screen.
How you cannot tell
Let us get the unreliable methods out of the way, because all of them circulate as advice.
By year. The most common suggestion and the least reliable. Yes, 4-pin dominates 2012–2015 and 6-pin appears from 2016 — but the changeover was rolling, not a fixed date, and it varied by model and plant. A 2015 F30 can be either.
By screen size. Both connectors appear behind 6.5" and 8.8" screens. Size tells you nothing.
By whether you have a touchpad. The touchpad was an option, unrelated to the LVDS connector.
By the menu. The software is identical. Nothing on screen differs between a 4-pin and a 6-pin car.
From the registration document or the build sheet. It is not there. It was never a customer-facing specification.
How you can tell
Two reliable methods.
1. Look at the connector. Remove the trim panel beside the screen — on most F-series cars it clips off without tools, or with a plastic pry tool. Behind it, at the back of the display, sits the LVDS cable. Count the pins: four or six. That is the answer, with no ambiguity.
You do not need to remove the head unit for this. Just the trim beside the screen.
2. Send us the VIN. We check it against the production data and tell you in writing which connector your car left the factory with. Free, usually within 30 minutes. Email info@oemcarplay.com.
If you cannot easily reach the trim, use the second method. It costs one email and it removes the risk entirely.
What happens if you order the wrong one
Nothing breaks. The connectors are physically different, so the wrong module simply will not seat. There is no risk of damaging the head unit or the screen, and no risk of an electrical fault.
What it costs you is time and inconvenience: the console is already apart, the car is occupied, and you are waiting on a replacement.
There is also no adapter between the two. A 4-pin module cannot be made to work on a 6-pin car. The signal itself is different — one analogue, one digital.

Common questions
Can I just order both and return one?
You can — you have a 14-day right of withdrawal. But you would bear the return postage on the unused one, and checking the connector or sending the VIN costs nothing.
My car is a 2016 model. Is it definitely 6-pin?
Probably, but not definitely. 2016 is exactly the transition year and it is the worst year to guess in. Check it.
Does this affect EVO or MGU cars?
No. The 4-pin/6-pin split is specific to NBT. EVO and MGU each have one connector type.
What if we get it wrong after a VIN check?
If we specified the wrong connector, we cover the return shipping and send the correct module. That is our error, not yours.
